Returning to the Magic of the Venice Carnival

Nearly four decades ago, I first stepped onto the Venetian cobblestones to partake in one of the most magical events known to mankind: the Venice Carnival. Over the years, despite a few absences, I have been part of this wonder more than 15 times. As time passed, my passion for the carnival has only grown, and with each return, I relive the initial enchantment anew.

Here I am again in 2024, filled with anticipation, even as raindrops slowly fall from the sky. But believe me, this detracts nothing from the event’s brilliance. In fact, it may even add to the magic, as Venice shows a different face in the rain.

The history of the carnival is deeply rooted in Venice’s past, stretching back to the Middle Ages when people, hidden behind masks, freely enjoyed the pleasures of life, forgetting their social status. As Carlo Goldoni wrote, “The true face of Venice can be experienced during the carnival, when everyone is who they wish to be.”

The Venice Carnival offers a new opportunity every year to discover ourselves and others behind masks and costumes. It is an event where the past and present intertwine, and there is a place for everyone in the magic. I hope that through my pictures, you too can experience this wonderful celebration and perhaps one day be part of this dazzling event in person.

Thank you for sharing this journey with me through the wonderful world of photography and Venice.

Venice

The decorative images for the blog post were taken in 2013.

Continuing the article, I am filled with profound respect and gratitude for the opportunity to have been a part of this magnificent spectacle. The Venice Carnival is not merely a gathering; it is a cultural heritage that spans centuries, seamlessly blending the past with the present and showcasing the wonders of human creativity and artistry in a breathtaking manner.

Each costume worn is not just an article of clothing; it is a representation of a story, an emotion deeply embedded within our hearts. As Shakespeare said,

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts.”

The Venice Carnival allows us to don new roles, discovering ourselves and the world anew.

The carnival’s history reaches deep into the past, back to Renaissance Venice, where people, hidden behind masks, reveled in the freedom that this mysterious guise afforded them. During this period, social distinctions blurred, and everyone became equal in the magical world of the carnival.

Each costume crafted in the workshops is a masterpiece, representing the perfect fusion of traditional artisan techniques and modern design. The level of detail in these costumes is astounding – every stitch, every embellishment, every color and shape tells a unique story.

I look back on this special time with deep gratitude and humility, grateful for the chance to have been part of this unique cultural celebration. The experience of the Venice Carnival is unparalleled, and with each visit, one encounters new wonders.

“Venice is a city of water, art, and eternal enchantment. During the carnival, all this becomes even more glittering, even more dreamlike.”

– With these words, I wish to conclude my thoughts, paying tribute to this marvelous event that calls us back year after year to relive the magic anew.

Thank you for being here, and if you return, you’ll be your Pagi.

I recommend visiting the “Farbharmonie” exhibit at the show. The medium-sized glass paintings from our “Farbharmonie” collection represent the perfect harmony of color and form. Each piece has a unique character that enriches the space and creates a balance between modern and traditional elements. Ideal for those who prefer medium-sized yet striking artworks.
